Sewing Must Haves

A lot of people who wants to start learning how to sew asked "There are so many stuff out there, what do I need to get?"

Yes, it's true, there are so many stuff out there, it could really be both intimidating and overwhelming a lot of times for starters. They have sewing kits for beginners and tons of sewing items that cost from a few cents to hundreds of dollars.

I can't really recommend any specific item, but I'd just like to share this article based on my experience. As a start, I would get a basic sewing machine first. If you could afford it, go to dealerships that specialize in selling sewing machines. They will show you so many sewing machines and what they can do. It could be overwhelming, but try not to, just take it as you go. And I do not recommend buying one right on the spot. Try to do a research over the internet, read the reviews over specific machine that you are interested in. I know a lot of sewing experts do not recommend getting those machines that you see in sears or walmart. But if you were like me and couldn't afford the one in the dealerships, don't be afraid and get one in sears or walmart. Just plain basic sewing machine that has straight, zig zag, and button hole stitches. These machines are ample enough for a starter, and then you can always upgrade when you feel more confident in your sewing. I found that Kenmore is more reliable than Singer. I know a lot of people relate good sewing machines and Singer, I did too, but after buying 2 of them, I must conclude that their quality is not as good as they used to. No matter what you decide to get, the hundreds of dollars model or the cheaper one, I can't say this enough, research, research, research!

Now, what about those walls and walls of little sewing stuff you see in your craft store? I would get a decent scissors (invest in a $20 or above kind of scissors, trust me they're worth it), yard stick, a quilter's ruler, quilter's pins (I have no patience whatsoever with small pins, so quilter's pins, the one with the yellow head, is the way to go for me), bobbins, hand needles, sewing machine needles, oh and freezer paper from your grocery store (I will tell you why you need this in my next article). If I missed anything, feel free to add them in the comment section.

Go to the patterns section, choose the one you like, read the back of the envelope, and it will tell you what you need to make that specific item, and get them, this will help you build your sewing supplies little by little.

Your supplies really depends on what you want to sew. I sew a lot of bridal dresses, so I have to maintain sharp needles to work with the delicate bridal fabrics, and because of that I can never have enough needles, all kind of needles, from hand needles, sewing machine's, and quilter's pins. I also can't get enough muslin, bobbins, invisible zippers, boning, white thread, silk organza for interfacing, tulle, and netting. Some who sew for children would probably need a lot of elastic, cute buttons, etc. Those who sew craft items, they might need to keep a lot of felts, ribbons, embroidery floss, laces, and so on.

You will find the sewing supplies you can't live with when you start sewing. So don't worry, your stash will grow as the time goes. But no matter what your sewing must haves are, one thing I know what we all seamstresses have in common, we can NEVER have enough fabrics.

One of boutique buyers, Ramona, said that fabric combos, patterns, and how unique it is is the 1st thing she'd consider when buying a boutique items, and then price and where her kid can wear them comes next. Kona Cotton Fabrics

First let me inform you that I am not whatsoever affiliated with the manufacturer of Kona cotton. I'm writing this article because of I was in the quest of looking for the perfect solid cotton fabric. I was looking for a cotton fabric that has a weight to it and is not so thin, I was also looking the one that have lots of colors I can choose. After some research and asking several people, I finally found my answer, it is Kona cotton.

Several custom designers recommended Kona to me. Christina, Pam, Kim, and Francoise are some of them. They told me that they have used Kona and are pleased with the quality. A little tip from them is to hang it dry after you wash it, it helps keeping the wrinkles to a minimum.

Robert Kaufman Fabrics is the manufacturer of Kona cotton. This line of fabric offers an array of color choices, 221 to be exact. This high thread count cotton is also a broadcloth, so it doesn't wrinkle as much as regular cotton fabric, which makes it great to use both for fashion items and quilting. Another plus of Kona cotton is that it has been successfully tested for harmful substances, so it is safe for skin. The price of Kona cotton in online stores starts at $4.19/yard. So the next time you are in need of good solid cotton fabrics, give Kona a try.

Custom Boutique VS Ready to Wear

When I was still sewing and designing both wedding dresses and girls' dresses, I couldn't count how many times people asked me to lower my price because the "ready to wear" version is this and that price, which is of course lower than mine. I am sure this is not an isolated case, I am sure I am not the only one who experience this. Most of custom designers probably come across with something like this.

I am not trying to talk trash about ready to wear, I love and wear them too. But I wish people would understand that custom and ready to wear is not even in the same playing field. It's totally two different thing, hence the two different price.

I saw on TV once how they produce jeans in factories. It took them only about 6 minutes total to make a pair of jeans. Meanwhile with custom, the patterns alone sometimes take days to make, it is CUSTOM made to client's measurements.

Most designers take pride on their craftsmanship and refuse to use any low quality materials. From fabrics to threads to trimmings, everything is hand picked thoughtfully. Then designers spend days and days cutting and sewing the fabrics, pouring all their thoughts and love and make sure everything is done correctly. Even buttons are hand sewn, which is not done in ready to wear, buttons are placed with machine. And in my area, which is wedding gowns, not only button are hand sewn, I use a lot of couture techniques which involves A LOT of hand sewing.

So I hope people start to appreciate custom garment more. Ready to wear clothing is fine for every day wear. But when you need that something special, there are plenty of good custom designers out there, try one. And once you have a custom made item, you'll be able to tell the difference in quality between custom and ready to wear. Because with all the work that goes into it, custom made items are truly work of arts.

Happy new year! I've been neglecting this blog for a few months because of my pregnancy, the new baby, and my moving out of state. So now that I am taking a little break from sewing and designing, I finally have a little time to work on the blog again.

As children clothing designers, colors are exciting and always be a big part of our designs. So what is a better way to start the new year than to talk about what color that is going to be hot in 2011. These are the 2011 colors from Pantone, I LOVE all of them, especially the Blue Curacao. HC Designer and Model of The Year

Few weeks ago HC celebrated it's birthday and held our 3rd annual Runway Launch. In this launch, HC picked designer and model of the year. We set up a poll for our members to choose, and here's the winner.

Now a little about Kerstin!

"First I would like to thank everyone for voting for me. I am excited and honored to be named Haute Couture's Designer of the Year for 2009 and be among a group of very talented ladies. I am Kerstin the creative mind behind Bambini Dreams.

I live in Germany close to the Netherlands with my DH Sören and our DD Sarah. I’ve been sewing and selling childrens boutique on e-bay for about 5 years now. Just this past year, I opened my own web site.

I love designing children's clothing with bright and colorful fabric and to embellishing them with appliques or embroideries. I hand draw and digitize each design. Digitizing and creating graphics has become a second passion of mine, and a second business as well, operating under the name Fresh-in-Design. "

Model of The Year, Maddie of maddiesbowtique.

Now a little about Maddie and her Mom Monica!

"We are so grateful for this opportunity! I am Monica, photographer behind Maddiesbowtique. Maddie is my oldest daughter/model. She is 6 years old, and has been modeling on ebay for 2 1/2 years. She was actually quite camera phobic when she was younger, but something miraculously changed when she turned 4 and all of a sudden, she wanted to have her picture taken. She started out modeling bows for me until I got a Canon Rebel xti camera and then we started in the ebay modeling business.

Maddie is a smart, extrememly self-disciplined child. She excells at reading and art and is just so sweet to be around. Adults and children alike are drawn to her calm, nurturing personality and she seems to make an quite an impression wherever she goes.

Maddie takes her modeling very seriously and will often suggest props, poses and ideas for best showing off the sets. She often gets comments from her teachers that she has quite a sense of her own st yle. Maddie says she would like to be one of four things when she grows up. A Fashion Designer, a Kindergarten Teacher, the President of the United States or a Princess at Disneyland. All very noble causes."

USCPSC MEETING WITH AMERICAN APPAREL & FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY LEADERS

My co-leader from Haute Couture For Kids group, Cassandra (thank you Cassandra :) ), gave me a link of video recording of CPSC meeting with top leaders from apparel and footwear industry.

The meeting was attended by Nancy Nord, the acting chairman of USCPSC and reps from top industry leaders, including Wal-Mart, JCPenney, The Children’s Place, Coats & Clark, etc.

The meeting discussed the new CPSIA law for children items made for children ages 12 and below. Of course as a lot of you may know already, this new law is so vague and poorly written. From what I heard few weeks ago, they will only exempt unbleached, undyed, untreated natural cotton. So what is that, cotton balls?

From what I gathered from this meeting was that textiles should be exempted from the new law that will go into effect on Feb. 10th, 2009.

These big chains have done numerous costly testing both wet chemistry and XRF testing (I hope I spelled it correctly), which it is in the millions of dollars, for thousands of textile items, and they all found the same results. And the result is that no lead trace found in textiles. These results covered both treated and untreated natural fabrics such as cotton, wools, and silks, and synthetic fibers such as polyesters, nylons, acrylics, etc.

One of the reasons why they can’t find lead trace in textiles is because lead is never used in textile manufacturing, both in the dying process as a mordant and in treatments. Lead is not an effective mordant, it did a poor job in color fasting the textiles. Thus it is never used in the first place.

Prof. Kim Browning from Catawba Valley Community College even did her own experiments by deliberately soaking some textiles in lead solutions, and rinse it only once instead twice just like the industry’s standard. She then tested the textiles and still barely found any lead amount.

While the textiles should be exempted, they think that more components in apparel still should be 3rd party tested for lead. Those components include zipper pulls, plastic buttons, grommets, snaps, screen prints, rhinestones, etc, because the unpredictable and various amount of lead trace were still found.

So what are textiles anyway? According to my encyclopedia here at home, textile has traditionally meant a woven fabric. The term comes from the Latin word texere, meaning to weave. But today, all other types of fabrics are also considered textiles. They include knitted goods, felts, laces, nets, and braids. The textiles industry also refers to the fibers and yarns that are used in the making fabrics as textiles.

So I hope the CPSC will recognize this and exempt textiles because product of textiles is safe. And if they do, it means good news for micro producers, crafters, and designers of custom boutique items, because it is a fact that 70-75% of handmade products in the US is made of fibers.

The video is over than an hour long, but it very informative and give us a little hope. That way we don't have to wear apparel made out of cotton balls after all, lol.

HC Design Challenge Winner

HC held a design challenge not too long ago, and we challenged members to create something using zippers and buttons and the color red. We had wonderful entries and the winner of the challenge is designer meandmygirlsboutique615, congratulations!

This designer created something truly unique. Take a look at how she used the buttons for the eyes and zipper for the mouth, and some teeth peeking out of the zipper, how cute and clever is that! Not to mention the flawless applique. Oh, every boys would LOVE to own this set.

I adore this garment by designer silly*jilly. The creative designer used the Andalucia fabric line from Patty Young. Very bright, fresh, and funky, and take a closer look at the details.

She created several pieces that can be mixed and matched, from cuffed capris, peasant top, ribbon corset top and pants, and they will be custom made from size 2T up to 6. My advice is to get them all. This design is FANTABULOUS!

I'm sure that most of you now know about the new lead testing law that will go into effect this February. I am not going to discuss it here since it has been covered by thousands of websites and by more knowledgeable people.

So I'm just going to make the best out of the few weeks we have by featuring wonderful custom made items that soon to be extinct. I hope the government will make revision on this law so that all of us can still enjoy superior quality custom made items.

I'm going to open this year with 2009's first editor's picks. This one is from designer wifeandmotherofpilots. This 2 Pc Damask Valentines set consists of tee appliquéd with a large heart in a pink and red dainty damask Michael Miller fabric and deco jeans with various sizes of hearts in pink and red minky fabric, red/pink dainty damask, red/pink polka dot and pink and white polka dot. It can be made long or short sleeved, and will be custom made from size 5-10.

Here are the donations we received from our generous designers.

First is 8 super gorgeous headbands from my fellow Anthology Inc.'s member, Katarina of Like Flowers and Butterflies. Thank you so much Katarina! Her ebay id is flowers*and*butterflies. Check her stuff out, they are stunning!

The second one is from Becky and Maiken. They donated 10 super adorable hats and 4 bandanas. Go to their website http://www.atuniqueboutique.com/ to find more awesome boutique items.

And I made these headbands and bandanas. I really wish I could make more. It's a bit hard to find times lately. But I am glad I can still manage to make these.

Tital items that are going to be shipped is 47. This will be shipped to ST. Jude Children's Research Hospital this weekend. We'll have 2nd wave of shipment on February, the deadline is January 31st if you want to donate. My goal is to have 100 items. 50 to send to ST. Jude and 50 to send to Littlest Heroes Project.

Girl's Costume History

Early 1800s

Dresses made out of muslin, dotted Swiss, white percale, lawn and nankeen - a yellow buff coloured fabric from China. High cut empire line bodice seam of the early 1800s were worn with a slip.

After 1825

Profuse decoration in the form of ruffles, flounces. Gigot sleeves fur trims with the waistline moving down in the same ways as adult dress had, was topped by ornate hats and bonnets.

Skirt Lengths and Hoop Styles

In the C18th all girls wore floor length gowns. In the early 1800s young girls began to have their skirts shortened. By the 1840s those skirts were true crinoline style. They were pushed out with stiff starched petticoats and horsehair crin fabric petticoats in layers. Later a wire hoop cage crinoline, a mini version of adult crinolines.

Pantaloons and Pantelettes

Full length pantaloons beneath skirts. Lace white frill peeping beneath hemlines. a simpler leg covering of white linen or cotton frilled tubes were called pantelettes.
Other undergarments meant to be seen included drawers with attachment legs for easy laundering and to accommodate lengthening.

Polonaise Styles

Crinoline on little girl's dresses moved toward the garment back. Long waisted dresses atop a false pleated skirt. The dress followed the slimmer styles of the early 1880s. As time passed this style continued but with the top part of the dress often bloused over a deep dropped waist sash. By the time of the second bustle girls sometimes wore a softer less restrictive polonaise lighter weight version.

Tartan and Sailor Looks

Sailor styles in various forms were especially popular once the seaside visit became the norm. Large sailor style collars and contrast rows of braiding decorated both girls and boys clothing through the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Quartermaster jackets were also worn over a plastron dickey false front instead of over a complete blouse. These last two illustrations show the large collars and jabots.

Early C20th Edwardian Fashions

Ornate frilled dresses. Often the dresses had a heavily frilled yoke and either a flowing smock skirt, which ended in a frill, or a bloused bodice. The dress might be either loosely bloused, or bunched with a sash into a blouson low waist effect. Flounces were popular too as skirts layers or as a decorative trim.

HC Modeling Contest's Winner: Kristi

I'm sure most ebay boutique community know who this beautiful model is. Kirsti is very well-known and has been modeling for quite a while, both in and outside ebay. And this talented model's last accomplishment was winning Haute Couture For Kids' modeling contest few weeks ago.

And talking about talents, this size 6 model loves doing art of any kind and involves in competitive cheer. She is very fond of the color purple, Hello Kitty, Fancy Nancy.

Her photographer mom, Karen, is now going pro after 4 years doing commercial work. She offers commercial modeling, also portraits for HS seniors, children and families, with 5-7 days turn around time for modeling shots.

This is what this Nikon D700 fan said about why she loves photography: "I love photography because it's like stopping time. When we look back years from now, only our photos & mementos will be there to remind us of this life we've lived."

How to Make Faux Fur Boot Covers

You will need:
- 1/2 yard of 44” to 60” wide faux fur fabric OR 1 yard of 30” wide faux fur fabric
- 1/2 yard of 44” to 45” wide lining fabric
- 2 yards of 1/8” wide suede cording
- 1 yard of 1/4” wide elastic

Cutting Instructions:
1. From faux fur fabric cut two rectangles, each measuring 16” high by 18” wide.
2. From lining fabric cut two rectangles, each measuring 17” high by 18” wide.
TIP: These measurements are for finished boot covers that measure 14 1/2” high and 17” in circumference. Add length or width to our original measurements as needed to fit your boots, but be sure to add the same amount to both fur and lining fabric.

Sewing Instructions:
1. With RIGHT sides together, stitch fur to lining along one long edge, in a 1/2” seam. Press seam lightly on WRONG side of fur fabric, pressing seam allowance towards lining. This will be the finished edge for the bottom of your boot cover.
TIP: Most faux furs have a definite direction, so be sure to mark the top of each boot cover with a small piece of tape on the wrong side of the fabric. This allows you to keep track as you sew, so you won’t wind up with one boot cover’s fur facing up, and the other’s facing down!
2. Fold boot cover in half with RIGHT sides together, forming a tube. The right sides of the fur and the right sides of the lining should each be facing each other. Matching cut edges, stitch tube closed in a 1/2” seam; begin the seam 6” from fur edge, and finish the seam 7” from lining edge.
3. Turn boot cover RIGHT side out, smoothing out lining towards the top and matching seam openings; lining should extend 1” past fur.
4. On each side of seam opening, turn back cut edges of lining and fur 1/2” to the inside. Slip-stitch lining to fur to clean-finish boot cover opening.
5.Turn back edge of lining 1/4” and press in place. Wrap remaining lining around cut edge of fur and edge-stitch in place, encasing fur.
6. Turn back finished fur edge 1”, forming a casing. Edge-stitch in place.

7. Cut suede cording in half and in half again; you will have four lengths of cording, each measuring 18” long. Cut two lengths of elastic, each measuring 14” long.
8. Stitch one length of cording to each end of elastic, overlapping cording and elastic by 1/2”. Thread one elasticized drawstring through each boot cover casing, being sure to keep cording ties even and elastic hidden inside casing.
TIP: For an extra-fun finish, add pom-poms to the ends of your drawstring ties, or thread large beads onto each tie and knot the ends to keep them in place.

Just want to let all of our members know that the 2nd donations for the hats / bandanas drive arrived few minutes ago. It's from Westminster Fibers Inc. And I was in shock to see how huge and heavy the box is, it's about 2 feet x 18" and about 1 feet deep. When I opened it, I saw hundreds and maybe thousands of fabric samples inside. I guess I will have fabrics to make bandanas and headbands until next year :) YAY!

I haven't seen all of the fabrics yet, but at a glance I saw some Tina Givens', Amy Butler's, Heather Bailey's, Park Slope's, Drawing Room's, Martha Negley's and tons more. I think it has just about all Westminster's designers in it.

First Donation for Bandana/Hat Drive Arrived

I am very pleased to find a box outside the door today. It is our first donation for HC Bandana/Hat Drive. It came from Amy Butler Fabric. And I was very surprised when I opened the box, it's not only that the prints are strikingly gorgeous, which I'm sure will help to cheer up these children, but also the amount was really more than I expected, they are very generous. I think this drive is going to be bigger than I thought, because I still have one more fabric donation from Westminster Fibers Inc coming in.

So I think I might need few volunteers to sew these once the box from Westminster arrives. I will organize a small group consisting of a few designers/seamstress. And we will have two teams. First team will be a bandana team. Second team will be headband/bowband team, they will sew fabrics that are too small for bandana (because I don't want any fabrics go to waste) and make them into headbands or bowbands.

I will list a custom outfit on ebay to raise money to pay for shipping back and forth to our volunteers.

I will open a new thread in our forum for people to sign up for this volunteer job. I hope we'll get quite a turn out.

I have to say that this is very heartwarming, knowing that I can rely on big companies and our members to do this drive. Thank you so much everyone. If this one went well, which I'm sure it will be, I will start another drive early next year. And I expect it's going to be a bigger one.

MIM-PI Children Clothing

This is one of my favorite lines of children clothing. Every collection is always beautiful, and I think it amazes both buyers and children clothing designers.

I'm not going to discuss this from a buyer's point of view, because it is a known fact that all the clothing is mouthwatering, and I'd like to buy them all if I can :)

Here are my top picks from their 2008 winter collection and I just want to do a quick analysis from a designer's point of view.

I am really fond of the mix and match of prints on the first picture. Big stripes, small stripes, big polkadots and small polkadots. The silhouette of the dress is so cute and chic, and the color of course is so versatile and can be mixed with all colors in your child's wardrobe.

The second picture, I heart the colors, very vibrant, and the pink sweater works really well with the top + skirt. And don't forget the little butterfly clippie, it really adds more girlie touch.

Third picture, I always love a tailored look and a big fan of suit jacket. This suit jacket is very classy yet still very edgy. The skirt is super adorable, the uneven hem shows the layer of tulle underneath and adds a fun texture.

Last but not least is these two sets. I adore everything about them. From the colors, prints, silhouettes, and layerings.

Hats and Bandanas Drive

I received an overwhelming response through emails about my post in my personal blog:

I am going to work on some bandanas about a couple of weeks from now for children who have lost their hair because of a medical illness. Amy Butler will send me some fabric samples to help this project. I will donate these bandanas to littlestheroes.org. Felicia, the founder of this non-profit organization, will send the items right to the children from The Littlest Heroes Project. She will also send the items to hospitals if they need some.

Anyway, because of the emails I received, I thought might as well make this to be a group thing. So I will collect hats and bandanas for these children to wear in winter and summer. We are looking for hats from infant all the way through adult sizes (for the teens and children with bigger heads!) Girls AND boys! One thing we ask is that you make sure that all hats and bandanas MUST be new. We cannot send used items to the children for health reasons.

The hats can be just regular hats or knitted. I recommend the bandanas measures approximately 22" x 22", 100% cotton. You can sew in your tag on your bandanas if you want. You can hem the edge with narrow hem or rolled edge.

Haute Couture For a Cause - Aleigha

This is our way of giving back and taking a stand for these children who sometimes feel forgotten because of their illnesses. 7/23/02 is when our journey with Aleigha began.. She was born at Parkview Whitley 4 weeks early. She had an abnormal heart beat and she did not pass the hearing test. The heart dr did a dopler on her heart and the PDA had closed on its own (god answered our prayers) the ENT went in and removed some wax covering her ear drum and she could hear(another answered prayer) at 8 months old (3/03) Aleigha contracted Invasive Group A Strep.. and was life~line to Saint Vincents Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis after dancing in the light for 4.5 weeks god answered yet another prayer Aleigha came back and was a normal child, she only had 5% chance of making it BUT she DID..

After all that Aleigha was a normal little girl, except for knowing she was a princess.. After almost losing her our entire family and friends ALWAYS treated her as though she really was one.

On Aug. 11 she told her dad and I that she needed to see her lung dr. her chest hurt, so we called him, we also called his wife who is her ped. they right away sent us to Parkview to make sure she didnt have phemomia.. she had been coughing but a child with asthma coughs alot and that is what we all thought it was the week before. Tom took her right up to Parkview where our lives changed forever! The CT scan showed it wasnt what the Drs had thought at all it was worse, much worse, it was a mass about the size of a baseball sitting on her lung. Once again her wonderful drs had to send her out to get the proper treatment.. the Lutheran Childens Critical Care Unit came to Parkview and took Aleigha down to Riley Childrens Hospital.. where we waited 24 hrs for another CT scan. The scan showed the tumor had grown and now took up 2/3 of the chest compressing every organ down and to the left. The bioposy showed it was Rabdomyoscarmo.. we agreed to have it sent off to make sure, it was nothing more, Later that same night 8/15/06 Aleigha was sent to ICU to be intabated, it seems that her 2 treatments of radiation, and hr 1 dose of chemo shurnk the tumor enough to let it slip and go over her tracha. Aleigha had already told Dr. Pradhan "I am a supergirl princess with the power of pink so I dont need your stupid medications." so our power besides prayer became PINK!

On 8/18/06 we were informed that her tumor was actually PleuroPulmonary Blastoma ( a rare childhood lung cancer) we were shocked our next plan of action help find a cure and to cure Aleigha. Aleigha was put on 11 different medication to keep her asleep and she fought them off, her nurses never left for the day NOT tired, after several rounds of chemo Aleigha was allowed to wake up.. the first thing she wanted was a potty chair, (9/28/06)

We were able to do surgery to remove 98-99% of her tumor, she has so far had 31 rounds of radiation and 6 courses of chemo. and still we know she will make it with the positive prayers ( we do know god hears them shes proof) and her POWER of PINK.

PET SCAN-5/1/07 100% CLEAR!! PRAISE God and Pink Power

In November 07 Aleigha relapsed. Her Drs. told us that this time the cancer would take her. That hit us hard, but Aleigha she looked at her Dr. and told him he didnt know what he was talking about, and preceded to tell him she would beat it this time too. Aleigha was put on an experimental clinical trial in Nov. 07. She goes to Riley ever 21 days for one day to start each round of chemo. She has 3 chemo meds to take. The first one is only on the first day. She gets that thru her PIC line and then the other are for 5 days and they are oral chemos. Day one is at Riley and days 2 thru 5 are at home. She cant stand the taste of them but takes them anyway. Then once a week we go to Lutheran Hospital here in Fort Wayne for lab work and check ups.It was very hard to hear that the cancer would eventually take her. We had long talks and decided to live with no regrets. That is to do what ever Aleigha wants to do. That way we never have the regrets of not doing something. We also let everyone know that Aleigha was in charge and we will fight this with her as long as she is able. The scans started to show small shrinkage in each of the three hot spots. Then in June the scans stayed the same no changes. That was good that they stopped growing and are now stable. In August 08 we went to teh PPB family get together and conference in Bloomington Minnesota and met other PPB families and the top Drs. in the study and treatment of PPB. Aleigha is patient 203 in the world and now there are only 254 cases in the world. We learned both good and bad news, and made connections with the other families and we keep in touch with them. The bad news that we leaarned was that no one with stage 3 PPB has survived after relapsing. We learned that our Drs. are doing an awesome job, and we believe Aleigha will survive this and pave the way for others to beat it too. The trial we are on ends in November 08. We will discuss with her Drs. what the next best coarse will be and continue on that path.Aleigha has been just amazing through all of this and has maintained a positive strong attitude that she will win. Aleigha is our Hero and has many followers on her web-site that encourage her and the rest of the family to fight on. Thanks go out to God, Aleighas Power of Pink, and all thoughs who pray for her.

So, since this is getting closer to Christmas, I thought it would be nice to play secret Santa and send Aleigha a little care package letting her know that she is not forgotten and that we all love her.

That way designers will know that their gifts made it safely to Aleigha. I will then post the pics here in the blog.

2009 summer trends are more timeless.

Dresses for the coming summer 2009 are to be in light cotton batiste and silks for girls and poplin-based materials for boys in more sober styles, said fashion experts. Material quality and cut will be key to the summer season.

A trend called "treasures of the sea" aims to balance function and looks, using materials such as linen, serge, cotton and seersucker, with simple graphic design. Blouses and tops are combined with long pirate trousers.

Sports and swimming wear for toddlers and older kids will aim at comfort, combined with bright, clean colours and printed fabrics in sky blue nuances, according to some buyers.

$700 Billion Bank Bailout

I hate politics and I hate doing this here. But I have enough of this economy. People can't afford to pay their mortgages, can't afford to buy food, can't afford to buy gas, and they get laid off by the minute.

I am outraged of this administration's plan to spend $700 BILLION to "rescue" US financial sector. And who's going to pay for that? It's us the taxpayers. And where is this money going to go? To the same institutions that cause this mess in the first place, those people who live in million of dollars mansions and have gazzillion dollars in their bank account.

If we have to pay for it anyway, why don't the government just give each household $1 million? It will solve A LOT of our problems and we will definitely feel the effect right away. I think it's WAY EFFECTIVE, it will stimulate the economy right away. People will pay off their debts, their mortgages, will be able to buy food (it's a fact that more and more middle class families go to the food bank because they can't afford to buy food), will be able to pay for medicines, will be able to send their kids to colleges, will be able to open businesses, and they will not have to worry about the gas prices and retirement for a while, and maybe they can finally afford to get environmentally friendly cars, houses, etc.

The US people have done a lot for their government, maybe it's time for the government to do something for them. Please somebody just start a petition for this or just send tons of emails to the white house or just to anyone.

Sorry for ranting and thank you for listening (or reading). I'm just so tired of this economy.

What is eco-fashion?

Eco-fashion is about making clothes that take into account the environment, the health of consumers and the working conditions of people in the fashion industry.

Eco-fashion clothes:
- are made using organic raw materials, such as cotton grown without pesticides and silk made by worms fed on organic trees
- dont involve the use of harmful chemicals and bleaches to colour fabrics
- are often made from recycled and reused textiles. High-quality garments can be made from second-hand clothes and even recycled plastic bottles
- are made to last, so that people keep them for longer
- come from fair trade - the people who make them are paid a fair price and have decent working conditions.

With the eco-fashion industry still in its infancy, the main responsibility at the moment lies with clothes manufacturers and fashion designers, who need to start using sustainable materials and processes.

I'm sure that you can find more sources by doing a search on the internet.

One of the choices is to buy undyed fabric and use dyes derived from plants. People have been doing this for thousands of years. Most plant parts have a mixture of pigments, which is why dyes made from plants tend to appear more subtle and muted—less "pure"—than synthetic dyes. These "earth tones" in plant dyes intrigue many hobby and craft dyers, because the rich hues of mother nature all seem to "go together."

These are just some of the plants that can be used to produce some dyes. Red cabbage, berries, aster, calendula, chamomile, dandelion, golden marguerite, marigolds, zinnias, tomatoes, alder, mint, parsley, birch, and so much more. Do some online search or go to the library to find more plants that can produce dyes. If you're not a gardener like me, I am always freaked out when I see worms lol, grocery stores, farmers market, and nurseries are great places to find your plant sources.

To prepare your dye bath, bring water to a boil in a pot large enough to allow fabric or fiber to move freely, allowing plants to simmer for an hour or more; most plants need to steep in water before fabric is added, and the longer they soak, the greater the intensity of the dye.

Next, add your fabrics or yarn, maintaining the bath on low-medium heat. When simmering fiber in a dye bath, the vividness of each plant hue will vary, so experiment with small sections first. The longer the fiber remains in the bath, the more intense the hue. Keep in mind, however, that fabric or yarn will lighten after it is rinsed.

Mordants are adhesive compounds that fix plant dyes to fibers and can be added to the dye bath, or a separate bath, before or after dyeing. Chemical mordants, such as ammonium hydroxide and chrome, are caustic and can cause skin and respiratory-tract irritation. Chrome is toxic to kidneys and a potential human carcinogen, and chrome-based mordant baths must be treated as household hazardous waste. Non-chemical mordants, such as rhubarb leaves, staghorn sumac (as opposed to poison sumac) leaves and oak galls, work just as well, but these can also be harmful. Rhubarb leaves, a natural source for the chemical mordant oxalic acid, are poisonous if consumed in large quantities, so keep these away from children and pets. Alum and urea are safer chemical mordants, but take care in handling alum as it can cause skin irritation.

I know this has nothing to do with children's fashion, but I just want to share one of my favorite designers' bio. He's Oscar de la Renta. I've always LOVE his design, so chic, so french, and so couture. He inspires me a lot so I hope he can inspire you too.

Oscar de la Renta (born July 22, 1932) is an American fashion designer whose often Latin-flavored work has dominated and influenced the fashion world since the 1970s.

De la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic, son of a Puerto Rican father and a Dominican mother. His original surname is commonly rumored to have been Renta, though there does not appear to be any evidence to support this. At the age of 18, he moved to Madrid, Spain, where he studied painting at the Academy Of San Fernando. He began to show an interest in fashion, however, and soon found work as a sketcher with some of Spain's top fashion houses. A little later, he took a designing class with one of Europe's top couturiers, Cristobal Balenciaga. He later moved to Paris, where he joined Antonio Castillo as a couture assistant.

In 1963, de la Renta relocated to New York, where he worked for Elizabeth Arden. It provided him with the experience which he would later need to launch his own clothing lines and perfumes.

In 1965, he left Elizabeth Arden and went to work for Jane Derby Ltd., an American fashion company in business since the 1930s. The labels of the clothes read "Oscar de la Renta for Jane Derby." After Derby's death in 1969, de la Renta took over the company and renamed it Oscar de la Renta.

Apart from the signature Oscar de la Renta products, he has launched the Pink Label products and has ventured into the world of women's accessories, men's clothing, sportswear and perfumes. He also produces, with an American manufacturer Century Furniture, a collection of home furnishings based on antiques and other items that furnish his houses in Connecticut, New York City, and the Dominican Republic.

In 1967, he became the third husband of Françoise de Langlade (1931-1983), an editor in chief of French Vogue. She died of cancer.

In 1989, the designer married the former Anne France Engelhard (1940-), the former wife of New York banker Samuel Pryor Reed and the adopted stepdaughter of American minerals industrialist Charles W. Engelhard Jr.

De la Renta has stepchildren from both marriages; he also has an adopted son, Moises de la Renta.

I LOVE this line of children clothing. Very beautiful, whimsical, and loaded with details. It's very inspiring too for us designers.

Very smart layerings, beautifully done! The set consists of denim overcoat, long sleeve tee, rosette dress and leggings.

Check out the construction of the skirt. Isn't it just the prettiest skirt you've ever seen? It wowed buyers and makes designers say "hmmm, how did they make that?" The cardigan with hoodie is also FAB!

I LOVE this skirt too. And of course the appliques on the cape.

Another gorgeous skirt with ruffles details. I'm not a big fan of velvet, but I LOVE the use of the velvet and the color combo too in this one.
